Bromstone Primary School
Supporting children with medical and dietary Needs
How we keep your children safe and well-cared for
At Bromstone Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children with medical needs receive the support they require to thrive in our school community. We understand that managing medical conditions and allergies is a vital part of keeping children safe, and we take this responsibility seriously.
Our Approach to Medical Care
We provide whole-school awareness training to ensure all staff are aware of our policy for supporting pupils with medical needs, and pupil allergy policy and that they understand their role in implementing it. We also provide training that means staff are competent and have confidence in their ability to fulfil the requirements of individual healthcare plans, working with the school nursing team to ensure training is appropriate for specific medical conditions.
Individual Healthcare Plans
For children with significant medical needs, we develop Individual Healthcare Plans in partnership with parents and healthcare professionals. These plans ensure that:
- All staff understand the child's specific medical condition
- Clear procedures are in place for managing their condition during the school day
- Emergency procedures are documented and understood
- Medication administration is properly managed and recorded
Managing Allergies: Benedict's Law
We are aware of the proposed changes to statutory guidance regarding supporting pupils with allergies, known as Benedict's Law. The DfE is consulting on changes to statutory guidance about supporting pupils with medical conditions and allergies. The proposed changes aim to strengthen support for pupils and would come into force in September 2026.
What We Do Now
- Staff Training: All staff receive training on recognising and responding to allergic reactions
- Emergency Medication: We ensure emergency medication (such as adrenaline auto-injectors) is readily available and staff are trained to administer it
- Allergy Action Plans: Children with severe allergies have detailed action plans that are shared with all relevant staff
- Communication: We maintain close communication with parents about their child's allergies and any changes to their condition
Working in Partnership with Parents
We recognise that parents and carers are experts on their own children's medical needs. We work closely with families to:
- Understand each child's specific requirements
- Keep medical information up to date
- Communicate any concerns or changes
- Ensure medication is properly supplied and stored
- Review and update healthcare plans regularly
