Term 3-Why lead when you can follow?

Why lead when you can follow?

Who should you follow?

Year 6 will be making sure they’re on their best behaviour, as the Victorian punishments were unquestionably terrible… We will be discovering a time when great minds thought new thoughts and ingenious inventors created so many things that we take for granted today. Let’s forge ahead to a time when Victoria was Queen and Albert was Prince Consort, and when some people lived in slums while others prospered.

In English, we will be reading The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit. This book is a classic text and so we will be focusing on the vocabulary and language to ensure the children's understanding.

We are also writing character and setting descriptions based on the story. We will be focusing on choosing powerful and interesting adjectives and adverbials, whilst also improving our description with similes and metaphors.

Towards the end of the term we be writing explanation texts. We will be linking this to our exploration of inventions in Victorian Britain.

In Maths, we will be exploring decimals. We will be looking at place value as well as using the four operations in calculations. We will then move onto looking at decimal, fraction and percentage equivalents and how to convert between them. After completing decimals, we will finish the term with converting between measurements where we will revisit meters, centimeters and kilometers as well as converting between miles and kilometers!

Our topic lessons this term will take us on a historical journey through the Victorian era, assessing its impact on the lives we lead today and the world around us. We will take a detailed look at the positives and negatives of the industrial revolution, and explore the development of the Victorian class system.

In our Science lessons, we will be looking at the inventions created during Victorian times. We will then investigate each of the inventions scientifically by looking at concepts of light and sound.

This term, Year 6 will be taking part in Forest School sessions on a Monday (Pevensey) and a Thursday (Arundel). Please ensure your child brings a change of trousers and shoes for their session. Thank-you.
