Term 1 - What do you see on an adventure?

Welcome to Term 1! We are excited for all that this term and new academic year holds. The children are settling well into Year 2 in their new classrooms and adapting to new routines and structures.

This terms big concept question is:

Prepare your senses; this is going to get adventurous! This term we will be exploring and delving into what we see on an adventure. We will be learning all about adventures throughout the curriculum, considering how each discipline can help us develop our knowledge and skills.

The children have already come up with amazing questions that we are going to cover over the term.

"What makes an adventure an adventure?'

'What adventures are we going to go on?'

'How do adventures make us feel?'

In English, we will be exploring instructional writing based on ‘How to make a bird feeder’. We will emerse ourselves into this topic through a range of experience days from making our own bird feeders to exploring making our own product following our own instructions. Towards the end of the term we will be exploring a 'Question and Answers' topic based on Neil Armstrong!

In Maths, we will continue to explore place value to 100, partioning numbers into tens and ones, using a range of manipulatives. We will then move onto deepening our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes from Year 1 by looking at the properties of shapes including edges, vertices and faces. At the end of the term we will explore addition and subtraction, recapping our knowledge of facts to 20 fluenty before moving onto related facts up to 100.

For reading this term, we will be developing our comprehension skills and learning a range of Phase 5 sounds in phonics to help us decode unfamiliar words.

In Science, we are going to be exploring the topic ‘Everyday materials’. We will work scientifically by: comparing the uses of everyday materials in and around the school with materials found in other places including at home, around the school and in stories. We will be observing closely, identifying and classifying the uses of different materials, and recording their observations.

For computing we will be continuing to use Natterhub, exploring how we can use the internet safely and effectively to keep us safe. In Art, we will be focusing on developing our skills as an artist. We will firstly focus on colour mixing, learning all about secondary colours, moving onto exploring ‘Pop Art’ focusing on the artist ‘Andy Warhol’.

Lastly in PSHE, we will be learning all about ‘Families and Relationships’ where we will explore how families can be made up of different people, recognising issues that occur in friendships and how adults may need to support to resolve them and how we may experience a range of feelings in different scenarios.

We will finish the term with RE week where we will explore the question 'Who is Jewish and what do they they believe?'. For this we will be exploring 'Judiasm' and discovering what is important in a Jewish home.
