Term 3 

Happy New Year and Welcome to 2024! 

Welcome back .

This term we are going to be learning about the qualities of leadership and our year group question is: Are you born to lead?

Reading

      

Our Guided Reading text this term is The Butterfly Lion. The Butterfly Lion is one of Michael Morpurgo's most perfectly realised books. The Butterfly Lion recounts the lifelong bond between a young boy and the white lion cub he rescues from the African veld. A lyrical and moving tale of a young boy growing up in Africa, and his lifelong friendship with a white lion. We will continue to use VIPERS to develop our reading skills. Our main focus will be on inference and deduction to develop children's ability  to develop their own responses to comprehension question.

English

In English we are using the Write Stuff to write a story based on the book by Charles Mackesy. We will be exploring the main themes of the book and continue to develop key writing skills to build an engaging narrative. For their independent writing, the children will be asked to finish the story and showcase all their newly formed writing skills.

Maths   

We are moving on to more multiplication and division this term. Using our knowledge and strategies to look at factor pairs, multiply by 10 and  100. We will also be multiplying and dividing 2 digits and 3-digit numbers. Through White Rose Maths we will continue to develop maths fluency and reasoning by using manipulatives, pictorial representations and abstract written calculations.

Science                    

Our science this term is 'Animals Including Humans'. Within lessons, we will be identifying the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions. We will be able to describe the simple functions of  the digestive system in humans and finding out how our POO is made! Delightful! 

The Big Question                      

 During our discussion of our big question we will be identifying disciplines on our epistemic wheel. We will identify the lens we will be focusing on, identifying skills and make links between discipline areas. In lessons, we will be locating places on a large scale map and identify the seven continents. Children will be encouraged to  draw conclusions between locations using photos, pictures and maps. Our main focus will be Africa, the home of the lion, leader of the animal kingdom. We will look at significant places in Africa and all the animals that live there. We will be applying our knowledge of food chains, predators and prey to explore why the Lions are at the top of the food chain. We will be looking at the artwork by Henri Rousseau; colour mixing, his jungle paintings and making our own jungle scenes. Alongside this, we will work together in PSHE to understand what relaxation feels like, develop a growth mindset acknowledging that mistakes are useful. We will identify our own strengths and what is important to us for our own happiness. 

RE         

We will be answering the question: What does It mean to be a Hindu? 

We will identify important elements of our life, describe some ways in which Hindus express their faith through puja, aarti and bhajans, as well as making links between Ghandi's actions and Hindu beliefs. We will describe the four aims of Hindu life, understand what it is like to be a Hindu in Britain today and explore Hindu Art.
