It’s 1939 and Britain is at war. Deep down in the Anderson shelter, Year 6 will learn why nations are fighting and why child evacuees must make the long journey from their homes and families into unknown territory.  

We’ll be digging for victory by growing our own rations, and delving deep into a bygone era, when loose lips sunk ships… 

English

During Term 5, we will be reading ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll. The book is based during World War 2 and will give children an insight into life of people during that time. We will use VIPERS to explore the story. In writing, we will be exploring the story 'Rose Blanche' and writing our own story endings as well as writing an emotive letter from the point of view of one of the characters in 'Letters from the Lighthouse'. 

Maths

To start the Term, we will be looking at measuring and drawing angles, circles and co-ordinates on a grid. In preparation for this term’s SATs exams, we will then be revisiting and consolidating key learning from the year, with a focus on number fluency, fractions and percentages, and multi-step problems. The children have worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and we know they’re going to do a brilliant job in May! 

Big Question Lesson

This term our big question is 'Does conflict effect the way we communicate?'. They will understand the impact of World War 1, and how it led to the start of World War 2. We will also discover the key leaders involved in the conflict, with a focus on Winston Churchill and what made him an inspirational wartime leader.  

 

 

Science

In Science, we will be exploring the world of electricity. We will build and test circuits with varying voltage to explore the impact on bulb brightness, comparing and giving reasons for variations in how components function, and use symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram to draw and build circuits.
